Scientific notation is a way of expressing very large or very small numbers in a compact and manageable form. It is especially useful in science, engineering, and mathematics, where dealing with extreme values is common.
Scientific notation represents numbers as the product of two factors:
The general format is:
a × 10^n
Where:
5.6 × 10^6
9.87 × 10^8
4.2 × 10^-4
8.9 × 10^-7
3.5 × 10^9
is easier than 3,500,000,000.(2 × 10^3) × (3 × 10^4) = 6 × 10^7
(6 × 10^8) ÷ (2 × 10^4) = 3 × 10^4
Numbers must have the same exponent before adding/subtracting:
(4.5 × 10^3) + (3.2 × 10^4) → Convert 4.5 × 10^3
to 0.45 × 10^4
0.45 × 10^4 + 3.2 × 10^4 = 3.65 × 10^4
Scientific notation is a powerful tool for expressing and handling very large or small numbers efficiently. By understanding its format and basic operations, you can simplify calculations and improve accuracy in various fields of science and engineering. Try practicing with different numbers to master this useful concept!
